SWERA Identifies Solar, Wind Potential in Developing Nations

Reuters reported last week that a new study released by the United Nations' (UN) Solar and Wind Energy Resource Assessment (SWERA), a group of 25 international organizations brought together by the UN to provide information on solar and wind energy resources, finds that the installation of wind and solar generation capacity in developing nations could help reduce poverty and stabilize energy prices.

Reuters said the study identifies 13 developing nations in Africa, Asia, and South and Central America that would benefit from increased use of solar- and wind-based electricity generation. For example, the news service said China has the potential to generate more than 100,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity, while Sri Lanka has the potential to generate 26,000 MW.

Reuters noted that each developing country included in the study will take SWERA's data and report back to the UN the amount of space that could realistically be used for renewable energy generation.
