Defensive measures

"While we may not immediately see the results of prolonged sun exposure, damage done in our younger years can show up decades later," says Rochelle Quezada, executive director of education for the Shiseido Prestige brands. Black women diagnosed with nonmelanoma skin cancer are seven and a half times more likely than White women with the same disease to develop an additional form of cancer, according to findings by Evanston-Northwestern Healthcare and Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. So make head-to-toe sun protection a part of your life.

* HAIR The sun's intense rays can literally fry our hair, so it needs extra protection. Spray on a hair coating like Frederic Fekkai Sun Protectant Spray (below, middle) which contains antioxidants and UV protectors.

* FACE Apply a moisturizer with SPF 15 daily, using a higher SPF if you plan to be in direct sunlight for an extended period of time.

* LIPS Protect your pucker with a moisturizing lip balm like MAC Tinted Lip Conditioner SPF 15 (below, left).

* BODY Don't forget to reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially if you're dipping in and out of the water. Completely Bare's Solar Shield SPF 30 pads (below, right) make for a quick and fuss-free touch-up.
